Upright

The Magician upright meaning

A man in a red robe over white stands behind a table. One hand holds a wand up toward the sky, the other points down at the ground. Above his head floats the sign for infinity, and his belt is a snake eating its own tail. On the table are a cup, a sword, a coin and a wand, one for each suit. Roses and lilies grow around him.

Upright, The Magician means you have what you need. Not some of it. All of it. The skills, the contacts, the words, the timing. What is missing is the decision to use them. This is a card of action, of turning an idea into a thing that exists.

In love it often points to someone who knows exactly what to say. Upright, they mean it. The words and the intent match, and they are able to follow through.

Reversed

The Magician reversed meaning

Reversed, the tools are still on the table, but they are being used for show. Someone is talking well and doing little. Charm with nothing behind it. Promises made to keep you close, not to keep.

Sometimes the performer is the person asking. You say you want something while doing nothing toward it, or you work hard on how it looks instead of on what it is.

It can also mean talent left unused, plans that never leave the notebook. Reversed is a no to the thing as it is being offered right now. The fix is the same either way: stop performing and do the actual work.

Love and relationships

The Magician in love.

If you are single

You are more able to bring someone in than you think. The Magician says act: go where people are, start the conversation, make the first move. It also asks you to check who is doing the talking. Someone very smooth may be practiced at it.

In a relationship

Upright, a good time to make something happen in the relationship. Plan the thing, say the thing, change what is not working. Reversed, one of you is managing the other, and words are standing in for actions.

About an ex

About an ex, The Magician says the outcome is more in your hands than it feels. Not through tricks, but through clear, direct action if you choose it. Reversed, watch for an ex who says exactly what you want to hear and then disappears again.

How they feel

The Magician as feelings

As feelings, The Magician means they are focused on you and feel capable around you. Interested, a little pleased with themselves, wanting to impress. Upright they intend to act on it. Reversed the interest is real but the follow-through is not.

What to do

The Magician as advice

Use what you have. Stop waiting for one more sign, one more skill, one more month. Pick the tool that fits and do the first concrete thing today. And keep your words and actions in line, because this card notices when they are not.

The question everyone asks

Does The Magician mean he still wants me, or that they will come back?

It means they have the means to come back and know how to do it. The Magician is not a passive card: if they return, it will be on purpose, with a plan. Reversed, be careful. A return can be a performance, all words and no change. Watch what they do in the second week, not what they say on the first night.

Yes or no

Is The Magician a yes or a no?

Yes And it is in your hands. Everything you need is already on the table. Use it.

↺ No Reversed: Not the way it is being offered. Someone is performing, and it may be you.

A single card answers a single question, and only if the question is narrow. If yours is about a person, I can read the whole thing for you.

In my readings

When The Magician comes up for me.

The Magician is a working card for me, in the literal sense. It is the card of someone at an altar with everything laid out. When it comes up in a reading, I take it as a sign that action will move the situation, and that the client is not as stuck as they feel.

What I look for is where the will is pointed. Upright and well placed, it tells me the road can be opened and the person has the strength to walk it. Reversed, I check who is performing. Sometimes it is the other person, sometimes it is the client, saying they want change while keeping every door shut. Road opener work goes best when the person is ready to use what is already on the table.

If this card is about someone

One card shows a corner. I read the room.

When a card keeps coming up about the same person, the question under it is bigger than its meaning. These are the two ways I can help with it today.
