Tarot card meaning · Major Arcana · VIII Strength tarot card meaning

Strength is the card of gentle power and patience. Upright it means courage, steadiness and winning with a soft hand rather than force. Reversed it means fear or anger is running things. In a yes or no reading it is a yes, slowly: gentleness wins this one.

Upright

Strength upright meaning

A woman in white, with a garland of flowers and the sign of infinity over her head, holds a lion by the jaws. She is not fighting it. Her hands are gentle and the lion seems to be letting her. A chain of flowers runs loosely from her waist to its neck. The sky is yellow and there is a blue mountain far off.

Upright, Strength means the hard thing will be handled by patience, not pressure. You do not wrestle the lion. You calm it. It is the card of someone who stays kind when they could shout, who waits when they could force.

In love it says the bond can hold if it is handled gently. A partner's temper, your own jealousy, an old wound between you. All of it can be soothed. None of it can be beaten into line.

Reversed

Strength reversed meaning

Reversed, the lion is loose. Fear, jealousy, anger or self-doubt is doing the talking. You are checking their phone, sending the third message, picking the fight. Or you feel too weak to try at all.

It is not a no. It is a not yet, because the problem is not the situation, it is the state you are approaching it in. Anything you push for while you are frightened, you will push for badly.

Steady yourself first. Sleep, eat, step away from the phone. Then ask again. The card comes back upright surprisingly often for people who do.

Love and relationships

Strength in love.

If you are single

Be patient with yourself and with whoever is coming. The right person responds to calm confidence, not chasing. If you have been hurt, Strength says you are tougher than you feel and softer than you show, and both are good.

In a relationship

The relationship can carry what it is carrying, as long as you handle it with a soft hand. A difficult patch, a temper, a trust issue. Reversed, someone is reacting from fear, and the fix starts with calming down, not winning.

About an ex

About an ex, Strength asks for patience and dignity. No chasing, no begging, no angry messages. If anything is going to soften between you, it will be through calm and time. Reversed, it says fear is pushing you to act too soon.

How they feel

Strength as feelings

As feelings, Strength means they feel deeply but steadily about you. Protective, patient, attracted in a way they keep under control. There is real passion under it, held gently by someone who does not want to scare you off.

What to do

Strength as advice

Be gentle and keep going. Do not force it, do not chase it, do not give up on it. Handle your own fear first, because a calm person can do what a frightened one cannot. Small steady acts of care will do more than one big push.

The question everyone asks

Does Strength mean they will stay loyal and come back?

It means the bond is stronger than it looks and patience works in your favor. Strength does not bring people back by pushing. If they return, it will be because things were allowed to calm down and they felt safe coming toward you. Reversed, it says fear may be driving them further off right now, yours or theirs.

In my readings

When Strength comes up for me.

Strength is the card I see most in readings about trust. Someone is worried about cheating, or about a partner drifting, and Strength comes up to say the bond can hold if it is handled gently. That is not a soft message. It is often the hardest advice for a frightened person to take.

When it is reversed, I look at the client first, not the partner. Is the fear coming from evidence or from an old wound. Loyalty work makes sense when there is a real bond to steady, and it sits best next to someone who is also working on steadying themselves.

If this card is about someone

One card shows a corner. I read the room.

When a card keeps coming up about the same person, the question under it is bigger than its meaning. These are the two ways I can help with it today.
