Death upright meaning
A skeleton in black armor rides a white horse, carrying a black flag with a white rose on it. A king lies under the hooves, crown off. A bishop stands with his hands together, a young woman turns her face away, a child looks straight up. Far behind them a boat sits on a river and the sun shows between two towers.
Look at who is on the ground. Rank does not help the king, prayer does not stop the horse, and only the child is not afraid. Upright, Death means an ending nobody gets to negotiate with. A relationship in the shape it had, a role, a version of yourself. It rarely means a literal death, and in my readings I have never once read it that way.
What it does mean is final. Not a pause, not a rough patch. The thing is over as it was, and the sun in the background is the part people miss: something comes after, but only once this is let go.
