Tarot card meaning · Major Arcana · XV The Devil tarot card meaning

The Devil is the card of a pull you cannot stop going back to. Upright it means attachment, obsession and a bond that costs more than it gives. Reversed it means the hold is breaking and you can walk out. In a yes or no reading it is a no, or a yes you will pay for.

Upright

The Devil upright meaning

A horned figure with bat wings squats on a black block, one hand raised, the other holding a torch pointed down. An upside down star sits on its forehead. Chained to the block are a naked man and woman with small horns and tails. The chains around their necks are loose. Either of them could lift theirs off.

That detail is the card. Upright, The Devil means a bond that holds you because of what you get from it in the moment, not because it is good for you. Desire, jealousy, the person you cannot stop checking on. It is often very physical, and very hard to walk away from.

I do not read it as evil. I read it as appetite with a lock on it. The pull is real. So is the chain, and the chain is looser than it feels.

Reversed

The Devil reversed meaning

Reversed, the figures are lifting the chains. The thing that had hold of you is losing its grip. Most often it means someone is finally seeing a relationship or a habit for what it is, and it no longer works on them the way it did.

It can show up as a clean break, or as a slow week by week loosening. Fewer late messages. Less checking. One day you notice you did not think about them until lunch.

This is why the reversed answer is yes. Not yes to the attachment, yes to getting out. The door was never locked.

Love and relationships

The Devil in love.

If you are single

Watch who you are drawn to right now. The chemistry may be intense and the person may be bad for you, both at once. Enjoy what you enjoy, but notice if you are bending your life around someone who is not bending at all.

In a relationship

There is heat here and there is also control, jealousy, or a dependency neither of you talks about. The card does not say leave. It says look at what keeps you both in place and whether either of you would choose it freely.

About an ex

About an ex, The Devil means the hook is still in. You may not even want them back, and still cannot let go of watching. That is attachment, not love, and it is the first thing I would work on before anything else.

How they feel

The Devil as feelings

As feelings, The Devil means desire, often strong and often mixed with possessiveness. They want you, or want a hold on you. It is not the same as wanting a future with you, and the card is honest about that difference.

What to do

The Devil as advice

Name the chain. Write down exactly what keeps you in this, whether it is the sex, the fear of being alone, or the hope they will change. Then lift one link at a time. You do not have to do it all in a day.

The question everyone asks

Does The Devil mean he is obsessed with me, or that they will come back?

It means the pull between you is strong and probably goes both ways. They may come back, because The Devil is a card of returning to the same thing. But it is not a gentle return, and the same patterns tend to come with it. If they do come back, ask whether you want them or only want the hook to stop hurting.

Yes or no

Is The Devil a yes or a no?

No Or yes, and you will pay for it. The pull is real, the chain is too.

↺ Yes Reversed: You are getting free. The hold is breaking and you can walk out.

In my readings

When The Devil comes up for me.

When The Devil comes up about a person, the first thing I look for is who holds the chain. Sometimes it is the other person, keeping someone close with hot and cold. Sometimes it is the client, who knows it is bad and goes back anyway. Sometimes it is something heavier: a bond someone deliberately tied, or a run of bad luck that feels attached to a name.

The work that fits this card is cutting, not binding tighter. Cord cutting takes the hook out so you can think about the person with a clear head, and where there is something heavier on top, I remove that first. What people choose after that is up to them. It just stops being a compulsion.

If this card is about someone

When a card keeps coming up about the same person, the question under it is bigger than its meaning. These are the two ways I can help with it today.

Questions

What people ask about The Devil

Is The Devil a yes or no card?

No. Upright it is a no, or a yes you will pay for: the pull is real and so is the chain. Reversed it is a yes, because the hold is breaking and you can walk out.

What does The Devil mean in love?

Intense attraction tied up with attachment, jealousy or control. The bond is strong, but it holds people through compulsion more than choice.

What does The Devil reversed mean?

Breaking free. An unhealthy attachment, habit or relationship loses its grip, and you start to see it clearly.

Does The Devil mean someone is toxic?

Not always. It means the dynamic has a hook in it. Sometimes that comes from one person, often from both, and sometimes from a habit rather than a person at all.

What does The Devil mean as feelings?

Strong desire, often possessive. They want you, or want to keep a hold on you, which is not always the same as wanting a future together.
