Upright

The Hierophant upright meaning

A religious figure sits between two gray pillars, wearing a triple crown and red robes. His right hand is raised in blessing, his left holds a staff topped with a triple cross. Two crossed keys lie at his feet, and two tonsured monks kneel in front of him. It is a picture of an institution: someone passing down what was handed to him.

Upright, The Hierophant means doing things the recognized way. Marriage, engagement, meeting the family, a ceremony. In other questions it means school, a mentor, a tradition, a path that has worked for other people and will likely work for you.

It is not exciting and does not pretend to be. In love it says this relationship wants to be made official, publicly, with a promise other people can witness.

Reversed

The Hierophant reversed meaning

Reversed, the rules are still there, but they are the wrong ones. A family that disapproves. A religion, culture or expectation that says you cannot have this person. A script about how relationships should go that you inherited and never questioned.

It can also mean someone who will not commit in any formal way and calls it being free. Or a relationship that looks right on paper and is empty in the middle.

Reversed is a no because something is following a rule that does not serve it. The card does not tell you which rule to break. It tells you one of them needs breaking.

Love and relationships

The Hierophant in love.

If you are single

You may meet someone through a traditional route: family, friends of friends, a community you belong to. You may also be ready for something serious and conventional, and that is allowed. The Hierophant likes things done in daylight.

In a relationship

A step toward formal commitment. Engagement, marriage, meeting each other's families, or agreeing on shared values. Reversed, someone outside the two of you has too much say, or one of you is living by rules the other never agreed to.

About an ex

About an ex, The Hierophant often points at what came between you: family, religion, expectations, the way things are supposed to be done. If those have not changed, a return will hit the same wall. Upright, it can mean a serious, proper second attempt.

How they feel

The Hierophant as feelings

As feelings, The Hierophant means they think of you as someone to be serious with. They respect you and want to do this right. That can make them slow and careful, and sometimes too concerned with what other people would think.

What to do

The Hierophant as advice

Make it official, or ask whether it can be. Say the vow, meet the family, put it in words other people can witness. And if the rules around this are not your own, decide which ones you are keeping and which ones you are done with.

The question everyone asks

Does The Hierophant mean they want to commit, or that they will come back?

It means that if they come back, they will want it to mean something: a proper return with a promise attached, not a casual one. The Hierophant cares about doing it right. Reversed, look at what pulled them away. Often it is family, beliefs or someone else's opinion, and that has to be faced before any return lasts.

In my readings

When The Hierophant comes up for me.

The Hierophant comes up most for clients whose question is really about commitment. They are not asking whether the person loves them. They are asking whether it will ever be made official. When this card is upright, I take that question seriously, because it is the card of vows.

Reversed, I look at who else is in the room. A mother, a culture, a religion, an ex-spouse, a set of rules nobody chose. Marriage work goes better when I can see what is standing between two people and a promise, and this card tends to show me exactly that.

If this card is about someone

One card shows a corner. I read the room.

When a card keeps coming up about the same person, the question under it is bigger than its meaning. These are the two ways I can help with it today.
