Upright

The Empress upright meaning

A woman sits on soft cushions in a field of ripe wheat. She wears a crown of twelve stars and a loose robe printed with pomegranates. A heart-shaped shield with the sign of Venus leans by her seat. Behind her is a forest and a waterfall running into a stream. Nothing in the picture is in a hurry.

Upright, The Empress means growth. Something planted is coming up: a relationship, a home, a creative thing, sometimes a pregnancy. It grows because it is cared for, and it grows at its own pace. You cannot shout wheat into ripening.

She is also the card of the body and of pleasure without guilt. Good food, touch, rest. In love she means affection that is warm, physical and steady, given freely by someone who has enough to give.

Reversed

The Empress reversed meaning

Reversed, the garden is still there but the water is only going one way. You are pouring care into a person or a project and it is not pouring back. You cook, you remember, you check in. They take.

It can also mean neglecting yourself so long that you have nothing left to give anyone. Or smothering: caring so hard for someone that they cannot breathe.

That is why reversed is not yet rather than no. The ground is still good. Feed yourself first, and see what is still standing when you stop carrying all of it.

Love and relationships

The Empress in love.

If you are single

You are more attractive when you feel well in yourself, and The Empress says you are close to that. Love comes in through pleasure and warmth: good company, things you enjoy, places you feel at ease. Someone generous is near.

In a relationship

A good, growing time. Affection, comfort, a home that feels like one. It can point to moving in, a family, or simply a season of being close. Reversed, look at who does the caring, and whether it is shared.

About an ex

About an ex, The Empress asks what the relationship fed in you and what it starved. If there is a way back, it is slow and built on care, not on one grand gesture. Reversed, it often says you gave far more than you got.

How they feel

The Empress as feelings

As feelings, The Empress means they feel warm and tender toward you. Comfortable, protective, physically drawn. It is a caring feeling more than a dramatic one. They like how life feels with you in it.

What to do

The Empress as advice

Tend it and give it time. Do the small caring things and let them add up. Look after your own body and rest, because you cannot feed anything from an empty field. And notice whether care is coming back to you.

The question everyone asks

Does The Empress mean they miss me and will come back?

It means they remember the comfort and warmth of being with you, and that is a real pull. The Empress does not move fast, though. If they come back, it will be gradually, as things soften, not in one sudden call. Reversed, it asks you to stop pouring into the absence and look after yourself while you wait.

In my readings

When The Empress comes up for me.

The Empress tells me a lot about who is giving in a relationship. When she comes up upright for a couple, the bond is fed from both sides and work on it tends to take root. When she comes up reversed, I usually know before the client says it: they have been the one doing all the caring.

I look at the cards around her for what the ground needs. Sometimes it is attraction, sometimes it is warmth that went quiet, sometimes it is the client remembering they are worth caring for too. Love work does best on ground like this, where something real is already planted and only needs feeding.
