Guide How to get your ex back: what actually helps, and what only looks like help

Two folded handwritten petitions tied together with red cord on a dark altar cloth, a jar of honey and a lit red candle behind them

It is late, the thread with their name on it stopped weeks ago, and you want someone to tell you what to do with your hands. Here is how to get your ex back, as plainly as I can put it: stop reaching, build a week they cannot see into, send one easy message when you no longer need the answer, and let a candle carry the one part you cannot, the reason it closed. Most of this is on your side. The rest is theirs to walk, or not.

I burn more candles for exes than for anything else, and the reports I write afterwards keep coming back to the same handful of sentences. This is the long version of them.

Can you get your ex back at all? The three things that decide it

Sometimes, and whether this is one of those times depends on three things you can look at tonight: why it ended, whether that reason has moved since, and whether the space you left is still empty. How much you love them is not on the list. It matters, and it is not what decides this.

Why it ended. Say it in two words. Distance. The lease. His mother. Pride. A break over timing, a move or one fight that went too far leaves a door that is stuck rather than locked. A break over who the two of you are together, said calmly, more than once, is locked, and no quiet reopens it.

Whether the reason has moved. Softened is not enough. The job that kept you in two cities has to have ended, the drinking has to have stayed stopped. If the only thing that has changed is the date, you are hoping time did the work, and time only does the forgetting.

Whether the space is still empty. People do not come back to a life that has closed around someone else. A new person three weeks in is not a wall. A new person who has met their mother is.

Two of the three in your favor and the road is open, however quiet it looks. None of them and I would read will my ex come back before anything else here.

And one thing said early so it is not buried: if they asked you to stop contacting them, or they left because they were afraid of you, nothing on this page is for you. I do not cast on a clear no, and I would ask you not to either.

How to get your ex back: the order that works

Distance first, then a week of your own, then one easy message, then the candle if you want one. Most people do it backwards: cast on a Monday, text on a Tuesday, spend Wednesday reading the silence like a letter. Each step only works if the one before it was real.

Go quiet, properly. Mute them, archive the thread, move their name out of your favorites so your thumb has to work to find it. No views, no likes, no questions through friends. The first week of quiet is where nearly all the texts get sent. Write them in your notes instead.

Fill the week with things that would still be worth doing if they never found out. The dinner with the friend you kept canceling on. The run. The course you never signed up for. None of it posted for effect, because a photo chosen for one viewer reads as exactly that.

One message, later, about the world and not the two of you. When you can picture them not answering and still sleep that night, you are ready. The message itself gets its own section below.

Then the candle, if you want one. The working goes on top of the quiet, never instead of it. It is set to bring you to their mind at the odd moment, and it cannot do that if you are already in their notifications every day. Light it, then leave.

Should I text my ex? What to send and what never to send

One message, after at least three weeks of real quiet, about something that has nothing to do with the relationship. Sent in daylight, with no question about them in it, and no second message if the first goes unanswered. Every exception I have watched someone make has cost them another month.

The messages that land are about the world, can be answered in one line without anyone deciding anything, and would still make sense if a friend had sent them. The record shop on Fifth finally fixed its sign. Your lemon thing, the one with the rind, do you still have the recipe? Mine came out like soup. Nothing in there asks for a reply, which is why they tend to get one.

What you are about to sendWhat lands on their side
I’ve been doing a lot of thinkingThe conversation they left, with a new first line
Can we talk?A meeting with no subject, which tells them the subject
I miss you, at one in the morningThe night talking. It is read at eight by someone having coffee
Did you ever actually love meA test, and nobody passes a test they did not agree to sit
A photo of the two of youThe past, handed back with the lid off
Hope you’re doing okayPermission to say yeah, fine and nothing else
A line about a place you both knew, with an easy answerSomething they can reply to without choosing anything, which is how people start again

If they answer, reply in daylight and match their length. End the first conversation yourself, once, warmly. If they do not answer, a second message only tells them the first one was not as light as it looked.

How to know if my ex misses me: the signs, in the order they come

Missing shows up as movement before it shows up as words, and the first movement is small enough to deny: a story watched, an old photo liked, a question through a friend. Then a message about nothing, then one about something. The order I see it in:

  1. The first two to three weeks: nothing you can see. The change is on your side; the ache stops arriving every hour and starts arriving every afternoon. With a candle set, most people notice the first signs in the second or third week, and this is usually the first.
  2. The view. A story watched to the end, a like on a photo from before the two of you. Somebody standing at a door with their hand not quite on it.
  3. The sideways question. A mutual friend says you were asked about. Not whether you are fine: whether you are seeing anyone, where you live now.
  4. The message about nothing. A meme. A song. Thought of you when I saw this. The road being tested from their side, and the moment people ruin by answering with a paragraph. Reply warmly, briefly, and later than you want to.
  5. The message about something. An apology for the specific thing, named. I was wrong about the move. This is the reason moving, and it is worth more than any amount of I miss you.
  6. A conversation lighter than the last one you had. That is how you know it is new and not the old fight in a new coat.

For a fresh break the full turn, where it comes, can take up to three lunar cycles. For an old one, longer. What stretches every step is checking: every time you look, you are not gone.

What is not a sign: a dream about them, or their song in a shop. Those are news about your own heart, and I wrote about them in dreaming about your ex.

What a candle for an ex does on the altar

A reconciliation candle for an ex does three jobs in one burn. It burns through the reason the door closed, it sweetens what went hard between you, and it puts your name back on the road between you so that reaching out becomes the easy thing. It works on the gap. It does not reach into anyone’s head and it holds nobody in place.

The part that matters most for an ex is the base. Both first names go near the top, where the flame reaches first, and the reason goes at the base, where it reaches last, so the candle burns the reason away at the end. I spend longer on that word than on anything else, because most people, asked what closed it, say everything. The candle cannot burn through everything. It can burn through the lease, or pride, or her mother.

The candles I burned for exes this autumn were mostly carved with distance or pride, and the two burn nothing alike. Distance burns slow and even, a tall flame that barely moves until it reaches the word and then flares once. Pride lies down: the flame sits low and sideways for the first stretch and stands up only when the wax nears the base. When I see that, the report says the pride is standing between you, and it is usually the pride of the person who ordered the candle. That is the one reason you can do something about tonight.

The full method, with the reason for every material, is in the reconciliation spell guide. Whether any of this does anything at all is a fair question, and I answered it without flinching in do love spells work.

How to cast a reconciliation candle for an ex at home

You need about two hours, a room nobody will walk into, and your phone somewhere you cannot reach it.

What you need

  • One red or pink chime candle. Red if the love had heat, pink if what you are calling back is gentler. A chime candle burns down in one sitting, which is the point.
  • Honey, a spoonful in a saucer.
  • Red cord or thread, a forearm long, cut fresh for this.
  • A square of plain paper and a pen. Unlined. Brown paper from a bag if you have it.
  • A pin or a nail to carve with, and a few drops of olive oil.
  • A fireproof plate on a clear table, away from curtains, shelves and anything with fur.

1. Choose the word before you touch anything

Settle on the one or two words that closed the door. If you cannot choose between two, you have two candles, not one, and the second gets cast another night. Write the word on a scrap and look at it. If it is true, you will feel it land under the ribs.

2. Write the two of you onto the paper

Their first name three times, one under the other. Turn the paper a quarter turn and write your own three times across theirs, so the names cross. Around them, one sentence in the present tense about the two of you, not about what they will do: The road between us is open, and we speak kindly again. Then stop writing.

3. Dress and carve

Oil from the middle of the candle up to the wick, then from the middle down to the base, both strokes toward you. Carve both first names near the top and the word from step one near the base, saying it out loud as you carve. The flame reaches the two of you first and the word last.

4. Taste the honey, then set it

A fingertip of honey on your own tongue, their name said once. Then a touch of honey on the petition, folded toward you twice. You taste it first because the person holding the candle is the first one who has to soften.

5. Tie the cord and set the candle over it

Wrap the cord around the folded paper and tie three knots, naming each one: you, them, what you are rebuilding. The tied petition goes under the plate, the candle on the plate above it. Cord and paper never go in the flame.

6. Light it and sit the whole burn

Say both names and your sentence once, out loud, then say nothing else. Sit the two hours and watch when the flame changes, because that is your reading afterwards. If you must leave the room, snuff it and relight it on your return. Never blow it out, never leave it alone.

7. Keep the remains until you have your answer

Wrap whatever wax is left with the tied petition and keep the bundle near where you sleep through the cycle. If the cycle passes in silence, bury it somewhere that is not your garden and let it carry the wanting with it.

What the burn tells you about your ex

The burn tells you how much is standing on the road, not whether they love you. For an ex I look at three things in this order: when the flame changed, whether it changed near the names or near the reason, and what the wax did on their side of the candle. The full table of flames and soot is in how to read a candle burn.

Two glass candles after a casting on the altar, one burned clean and one with soot on the upper glass, red cord and dried herbs between them

What the candle didWhat I tend to write in the report
Burned clean until the flame reached the carved word, then foughtThe two of you are fine. The reason is not. Expect the first contact to go around it rather than through it.
Flame leaned toward their name from start to finishThey are leaning in, whatever their silence says. Do nothing this week.
Wax pooled on your side and ran off theirsYou are holding more than they are right now. Not closed. Uneven.
Burned fast and hot, done earlyQuick movement, often a message inside the first week, often from a bad night of theirs. Answer it in daylight.
Went out twiceBelieve it. I would not relight a third time, and I would not cast again this month.
A wall of wax left standing around the wickSomething is holding the work in, and it is nearly always the person who ordered it, still checking.

A candle that fights is still an answer, and a quicker one than a month of silence. When mine fight, I write down exactly where, and the second candle, if there is one, goes on that word alone.

How to get your ex back when it has been months, not weeks

An old break needs the reason cleared before anyone can be called back, which is why I set two candles for it and never one. The first burns on the reason alone. The second, read from what the first did, calls them. A single candle on a long silence tends to burn clean and change nothing, because it is calling someone back to a wall that is still standing.

If the road opens and you want it held while they come round, a honey jar spell fed once a week is the gentler tool for the months after.

The mistakes that undo it

Seen from the altar, in the order they usually happen.

  • Casting before you have gone quiet. The candle is set to bring you to their mind at the odd moment. It has no odd moments to work with if you were in their inbox this morning.
  • The second message. The first one was light. The second tells them it was not.
  • Looking through someone else’s account. It is still looking, and a worse kind, because now a friend is in it with you.
  • Promising to change everything. A promise made in panic is a promise they are being asked to trust in panic. Change one thing and let them notice.
  • Telling them about the candle. The work is meant to arrive as their own thought, and it cannot if you have told them where the thought came from.

When getting them back is the wrong goal

Sometimes the honest answer to how to get your ex back is a different question.

Where things standWhat I would use instead
They asked you not to contact themNothing aimed at them. A cord cutting for your side, and I will not cast anything else
They are with someone newTime, and a reading before any candle. Reconciliation set against a new relationship burns badly
You want the message more than the relationshipA contact me spell, which is narrow on purpose
You want them to feel what they walked away fromA regret spell, and honesty with yourself that it is not the same work
You want the ache to stop more than you want themCord cutting. It harms nobody and leaves the door where it is
You do not know whether you should try at allAn evening with should I get back with my ex before the candle gets one

The longer version of how to be gone well is in how to make him miss you, and it holds whoever him is.

When I cast it for you

Order before 6 pm ET and your candle goes on the altar tonight: both names crossed on the petition, the honey tasted and set, the candle carved with the word that closed it, tied with fresh red cord and burned through in one sitting.

What comes back is a photograph of your candle after the burn and a written report: how it burned and when it changed, what I read in it for your situation, what to do this week and what to watch for. If the road looks closed, the report says so in plain words. Reply with questions and I answer them.

  • Single Candle when the break is recent, a matter of weeks, and contact has gone cold rather than gone altogether.
  • Double Casting if it has been months, or if there is silence you have already tried to break. The first candle burns through the reason and the second calls them back.

You send first names, yours and theirs, and roughly how long it has been since you last spoke. Not a birth date, not a chart, and not the whole story unless telling it helps you. If what you receive is not what I have described, it is a re-cast or a refund, within thirty days.

Questions

What people ask about the how to get your ex back

Do exes come back after no contact?

Some do, and the ones who do come back to a quiet, not to a tactic. No contact works when it is real: no views, no likes, no questions passed through friends. It gives them room to miss you instead of room to be irritated by you. It does nothing for someone who left relieved, and it is not a punishment you are handing out. If you are counting the days until you are allowed to text, it is not working yet.

How long should no contact last before I reach out?

Until you can picture them not answering and still sleep that night. For most people that is three weeks at the very least, and a lunar cycle is a better measure than a calendar month. The test is not the number of days. It is whether you would be writing to say hello or writing to get a reply. The first lands softly. The second is felt from the other side, however short the message is.

Should I text my ex first, and what should I say?

Once, after real distance, and about something outside the two of you. A line about a place you both knew, a question with an easy answer, something you saw that was theirs before it was yours. Nothing about the relationship, nothing about how much you have grown, nothing sent after midnight. If they asked you not to contact them, you do not text at all, and no amount of time changes that.

How do I know if my ex misses me?

By what they do when nothing is forcing them. They watch a story and do not hide it. They ask a friend about you and the friend tells you. They send a message about nothing in particular, in daylight. Missing shows up as small, deniable movement toward you before it shows up as words. If you are only watching for the big message you will miss all of it and start chasing at exactly the wrong moment.

Can an avoidant ex come back?

Yes, sideways and slowly, and almost never while being chased. An avoidant ex steps closer when the pressure drops and steps back the moment it returns. Keep any contact short and warm, let them set the pace, and do not ask what you are to each other in the first conversations. The question they fear most is the one you most want to ask, so hold it longer than feels fair.

Does a reconciliation spell actually help you get an ex back?

It helps with the one part you cannot reach yourself: the reason the door closed. Most of how to get your ex back is on your side, the distance, your own life, one easy message. The candle burns through what sits between you, pride or a hurt that was never named, and sweetens what went hard. It does not change what anyone feels, and it does not work on someone who asked to be left alone.

What if my ex is already seeing someone new?

Then this is not the week for reconciliation work, and I would not cast it. A new relationship has to run its course before anyone looks back, and a candle set against that tends to burn badly and tell me so. Give it the time it needs, keep your distance real, and if you want to know whether there is anything left underneath, a reading answers that more honestly than a candle would.
