Should I get back with my ex? Sometimes yes, and more often than people want to hear, no. Yes when the thing that ended it has actually changed, when you both want the relationship rather than the relief, and when you miss the person and not the place they held in your days. No when the only thing that has changed is how the evenings feel.
People bring me this after a message came back to life out of nowhere, or after three months of quiet that suddenly felt unbearable. Most of them already half know. I do not sell permission, in either direction. What I can give you is a way to look: the reasons that hold, the signs on both sides, a written exercise and three cards you can do tonight, and what I see in the spreads when it is worth it and when it is not.
Should I get back with my ex? The three reasons that hold
Three reasons hold up over time: the thing that ended it has changed and you can both name the change; you want the relationship with its hard parts included, not the first month of it; and you feel steadier near them rather than more anxious. Everything else, missing them, a lonely week, one good night out of nowhere, is a feeling, and feelings are not reasons.
The change you can both name. Not we’ve both grown. The job that ate every weekend ended. The drinking stopped and has stayed stopped through a bad month. The parent who sat between you is no longer in the house. If you can say it in one sentence and they would say the same sentence, it is a change. If you would each describe something different, nothing has moved except the two of you apart.
The whole thing, not the opening. Picture a Tuesday from the last month you were together. Not the trip, not the first summer. The Tuesday. If you want that Tuesday back, you are asking a real question. If you only want the beginning, you are missing a memory, and nobody can give you one of those twice.
Steadier, not hungrier. Around someone who is good for you, your shoulders come down. Around someone who is bad for you, you check your phone more. Notice which one happens in the hour after you hear from them. Your body answers this question faster than your head does.
Are you missing the person, or the place they held in your days?
Most of what you miss after a breakup is the place: being chosen, the good morning message, someone to tell about the stupid thing at work, who you were when you were half of something. All of it is real and none of it belongs to this particular person. The place can be filled by someone else. The person cannot. Work out which one you are missing before you decide anything.
A test I give people: write down the three things you miss most. Then ask whether a kind stranger could give you each one. The good morning text, yes. Someone at the table, yes. The exact way they said your name when you were being ridiculous, no. If the list is all place, you are lonely, and that is allowed. If there is a line on it that only they could fill, you have something to think about.
The sister question, whether they are even coming, has its own guide: will my ex come back. Read this one first. There is no use knowing the door is open if you have not decided whether you want to walk through it.
Signs it is worth trying again
None of these is proof. Together they are a reasonable case that the door is worth opening, slowly.
- They name their part before you ask them to. Not a grand apology. A plain I handled the move badly that arrives without a prompt.
- The thing that ended it can be said out loud in a room with both of you in it. If you can name it to their face and your chest does not tighten, it has lost most of its charge.
- There is a plan with a date in it. They move back in March. The job starts in June. We’ll work it out is not a plan.
- You have both been fine without each other. The pairs that last the second time are two people who learned they could live alone and chose not to. Two people who could not are not choosing anything.
- Contact happens in daylight and about ordinary things. The one in the morning message is a different animal, and it is covered in the next section.
- Nobody new, and no hurry to find someone. Not a rebound you are hoping fails. A quiet year.
Signs it is really over
Some of these are hard to read on a screen. I would rather you read them here than learn them over another six months.
- They asked you not to contact them. That is not a door for working on. It is the answer, and respecting it is the only move that keeps your dignity in the room.
- The same reason ended it twice. Two endings for one reason means the reason is the relationship, and a third try is the second try with a shorter fuse.
- They have moved on in plain sight. Not a rebound they are hiding. A life that has visibly arranged itself around someone else.
- You are doing all of it. Every message, every plan, every repair comes from your side of the table. Love that only one person is carrying is a weight, whatever else it gets called.
- They come back only when their life goes wrong. A job lost, a new relationship cooled, the dark part of the year. If you can predict their return from their bad news, you are the known warm thing, and known warm things get left again when the weather turns.
- One of you was afraid of the other. If there was violence, threats or control, do not go back, and do not let anyone talk you into it. I will not cast for this and I will not read it as a love question. Talk to someone you trust, or a local support service, before you answer any message.
Should I get back with my ex if nothing has changed but the loneliness?
No, and I say it gently because loneliness is the most honest reason people have for asking. It is still not a reason to go back. Nothing that ended it has moved, which means the ending is still in the room, waiting. What loneliness is a reason for is a better month, and there are kinder ways to get one than reopening the thing that hurt you.
Choose a stretch of time, a lunar cycle or two, and live inside it as if they are not coming. Mute, archive, move the old messages somewhere you have to work to reach. Say the reason it ended out loud to one friend, because the mind romanticises what it does not name. If the pull will not let go on its own, a cord cutting spell takes the hook out without harming them and without shutting any door they might one day open. People write to me a few weeks after one surprised that they went a whole day without checking.
How to do the two-column exercise and the three card pull
This is what I would give a friend who asked me this at my kitchen table. It takes half an hour, and the writing matters as much as the cards.

What you need
- A page and a pen. Paper, not a phone. The phone has their name in it.
- A deck you know. Any standard deck you have shuffled before.
- Half an hour alone, with their messages out of reach.
- One candle, if it helps you sit still. It does nothing for the cards.
1. Write the last month, not the first
Two columns. On the left, what you miss. On the right, what you do not: the silences, the argument that kept arriving, the way Sunday evenings felt. Write the right column until it is at least as long as the left. If you cannot, you are not remembering the relationship. You are remembering the trailer.
2. Write what would be different, in one sentence each
One sentence for what you would do differently. One sentence for what they would. If the second sentence is they’d try harder, you do not have one. If you cannot write theirs without guessing, that is information, and the cards will probably hand it back to you.
3. Lay three cards: the pattern, the change, the cost
Shuffle with the question in your head: should I try again with Sam, as things stand? Their first name in it. Then three cards left to right. The first is what the two of you make together, the pattern that runs under every good and bad month. The second is what has actually changed since it ended. The third is what going back would cost you.
4. Read the cost against the change
The first card confirms what you already know and you will want to linger there. Do not. Read the second and third together. A real change under a bearable cost is a yes with conditions. No change under a heavy cost is a no, however warm the first card was. A heavy cost next to a card of real change is the hard one: it can work, and it will ask more of you than the first time did.
5. Sleep on it before you answer anything
Write down the three cards and the two columns, then put the deck away. Do not pull again tonight. Do not reply to them tonight. Decisions about going back belong to a morning, and the morning will still have the page.
What the cards show when it is worth it, and when it is not
When it is worth it, the change card shows something that moved: Temperance, two cups being poured into one slowly, the Three of Pentacles, two people building a thing with their hands. When it is not, the change card shows nothing at all, the Six of Cups, which is memory wearing the costume of change, or the Wheel, which is the same turn coming round again.
The cost card is where the readings I write for this question earn their keep. People expect the Devil there and brace for it. The ones that land most often are quieter.
| The card in the cost position | What I tend to write |
|---|---|
| The Eight of Swords | You would go back into a room you already know the way out of, and forget the way out again |
| The Ten of Wands | You would carry it. All of it. They would let you |
| The Seven of Swords | Something is being kept from you, and you half know what |
| The Five of Cups | The grief has not been drunk yet, and you would be pouring it into the new start |
| The Four of Wands | A homecoming, and a real one. This is the card I am happiest to write here |
| The Devil | The pull you have been calling love. It burns badly on a reconciliation candle too, which is how I know it when I see it |
The spreads I laid at my altar this autumn for people asking this had the Six of Cups in the change position more than any other card, and I wrote the same thing each time: nothing has changed except that you miss them, and missing them is what brought you here.
The mistakes people make the second time around
- Skipping the conversation about what ended it. It feels like reopening a wound. It is cleaning one. The pairs that last the second time had that conversation until it was boring.
- We’ll see how it goes. That is the first time again, with less patience on both sides.
- Moving back in within the month. The old Tuesdays return with the furniture. Give it a season in separate rooms.
- Telling nobody. If you are hiding it from the friends who held you through the breakup, some part of you already knows what they would say.
- Keeping score. If you go back, you go back without the ledger. If you cannot put the ledger down, do not go.
- Pulling cards every night for a different answer. The second pull on the same question is shopping, and the deck will sell you what you came for.
When the answer is no, and what I would use instead
Then the work is on you, and it is the more useful work, though it never feels that way in week one. The pull is the problem: the profile checked, the old thread reread, the last conversation replayed with better lines. The relationship closed months ago. The pull keeps the wound open.
A cord cutting is the working for that, and I would use it before anything else. It does not harm them. It does not slam a door. It takes the hook out of you, so that if they ever do come back, you get to choose with a clear head rather than a sore one.
If the answer is yes, go slowly and say the hard thing early. The gap itself, the silence and the pride sitting on top of something real, is what a reconciliation spell works on, and I will not cast it where someone left afraid. The fuller plan, what to text, what not to, how long to wait, is in how to get your ex back. If what you want is narrower than the relationship, one message or one unblock, a contact me spell is the lighter working for it.
When I read it for you
Give me one honest question, the first names involved, and what you really want to find out. The plainest version is the best one: should I try again with this person, and what is really in the way? I do not read from birth dates or charts, and you share as much of the story as you want to. Order before 6 pm ET and you have the written reading in your inbox the same day.

What comes back is the cards in the order they land, what each one shows for your question, the parts I cannot place said as such, and what to do this week. If the cards say try, I tell you what to watch for and what to say first. If they say it is over, I write that it is over, and I do not sell you a casting to argue with them.
- Standard, about 900 words, answers the one question you asked.
- In Depth, about 2000 words, reads the people around it too: the new partner, the family, the friend in the middle. Take it if this has gone on for months and keeps ending and restarting.
Reply with questions and I answer them. If nothing clear comes through, I tell you that rather than dress it up.
Ask your question, or read about the reading first.
