You know exactly whose name it is, and you are tired of what it costs you every day to carry it. A cord cutting spell cuts the tie between you and a person, a place or a pattern that keeps draining your attention: the checking, the replaying, the waiting for a message that is not coming. It does not touch them, and it does not erase anything you felt. It gives you your own attention back.
I look before I cut, and I say plainly when there is nothing there. What follows is the long version.
What happens when you do a cord cutting?
The flow of attention running from you to them stops feeding. Within the first three weeks most people notice three things: sleep comes easier, their name stops landing like a blow, and the checking stops without a decision to stop. The person is untouched. What changes is the cost of carrying them.
A cord is not a metaphor to me, because I can see it in the burn. It is the pull you feel toward someone after it should have stopped, and it shows up as habits. You check their profile. You rehearse conversations that will never happen. Every one of those is attention running one way down a line, and a line that only runs one way drains the end it runs from.
The cut ends the flow. It does not end the history, and it does not remove the person from the office or the family if that is where they live. A cord cutting with a coworker leaves you with a coworker. It takes away the part that was costing you.
In the cutting candles I burned this autumn, the white candle, the one that stands for the person who ordered the work, has nearly always burned low for the first half hour and then stood up tall once the cord was cut. I think of that as the attention coming home.
Who the cord cutting spell is for, and who it is not
For anyone whose attention keeps running to a person, a place or a habit that gives nothing back: an ex, a friend who went sharp, a parent, a job that ended badly, a city, a phone habit. Not for someone you want back, not for removing a person from a life you share, and never against anyone’s will or body.
The cord does not have to have a face. I have cut cords to a flat someone could not stop driving past, to a workplace that had been gone a year, and to the habit of checking a particular account at two in the morning. The method does not change. You write the habit or the place where the name would go.
Where I say no, I say it before the candle is lit. If what you want is for them to come back, this is the wrong working, so read should I get back with my ex first and decide which you want. If you want them to feel what they did, that is a different candle. If you want them gone from a job or a family you share, no candle does that, and I would not cast one that tried. The scissors are only ever on your side of the cord.
It is also not a curse removal. If you believe something was sent at you on purpose, that is return to sender spell territory, and the first step there is looking, not cutting.
Why a black candle, a white candle, scissors and salt
Black for them and what ran between you, white for you, a cord to make the tie visible so it can be cut, scissors that cut once and clean, and salt to seal the ends so nothing grows back. Each one does a single job, and the working fails when one is skipped.
The black candle stands for the other person and for what ran between you. Black is the ending color because it takes whatever you give it and holds it, and it carries their name and the word cut, so the flame reaches the name first and the cut last. Its remains leave your house.
The white candle is you. White is the color of attention with nothing on it. It carries your name alone, and its remains stay, because what it holds is yours.
The cord is the tie, made visible so that it can be cut. Cotton or wool, never nylon, because a synthetic cord melts and strings instead of cutting clean, and a cord that will not cut clean is a bad omen you made yourself. Red if what ran between you was love. Black for anything else.
The scissors cut once. At my altar I keep a pair that cut nothing but cord, never paper, never herbs, so that nothing else is in the blade. At home, any sharp pair will do, washed in salt water afterwards. The blade moves away from you when it cuts.
The salt seals the cut ends so the cord cannot knit back. A pinch on each end, a handful in the bath after.
Hyssop goes in that bath if you have it. It is the purging herb of the old texts, and a salt and hyssop shower, poured from the head down after the cut, is how I finish every one of these at my own altar.
Saturday and the waning moon: when to cut
Saturday, on a waning moon, late, after the house has gone quiet. Saturday belongs to Saturn, who governs endings, boundaries and the hard line. The waning moon takes things away. The dark of the moon, the last two nights before the new one, suits a cord that has been there for years.
The hour matters less than the state you are in. Do not cut on the night they texted. Do not cut drunk, and do not cut crying, because a cord cut in the middle of a wave is a cord cut by someone still holding it.
The one timing rule I will not bend is this: cut when you are ready to stop reaching, not when you are angriest. Anger is attention too, and a cord cut in anger grows back as resentment, which is the same cord in a different color. If you are not ready this Saturday, next Saturday is fine.
How to do a cord cutting spell with scissors and candles
Two chime candles, a cord as long as your forearm, scissors, salt, two slips of paper, and about two hours. This is the working I set at my altar, with the looking part left out because you already know what you are cutting.

What you need
- One white chime candle for you and one black chime candle for them.
- A cotton or wool cord about as long as your forearm. Red if it was love, black for anything else.
- Scissors and a handful of salt.
- Two slips of plain paper and a pen.
- A pin to carve with and a few drops of olive oil.
- Two fireproof plates on a clear, steady surface, a forearm apart, away from curtains, paper and pets.
1. Write the two slips
On the first slip, your first name. Fold it toward you. On the second, their first name, or the place or the habit if the cord has no face, and under it the pull in two words: the checking, the hope, the anger. Fold it away from you. Your slip goes under the white candle’s plate, theirs under the black.
2. Dress and carve both candles, white first
Oil the white candle from each end in toward the middle, toward you, and carve your first name near the top. Oil the black candle from the middle out toward each end, away from you, and carve their name near the top and cut near the base, where the flame finishes. You are carved first, because the cut is for you.
3. Lay the cord
Tie a knot at each end of the cord, one for you and one for them, and lay it along the table from the white plate to the black one, well clear of where the flames will be.
4. Light white, then black
Light the white candle and say your name. Light the black candle and say theirs, or name the pull. Then say once: what runs between us is ended here. Stop talking and watch how each flame stands.
5. Cut, once
When both candles have burned down about a third, pick up the scissors and cut the cord in the middle, the blade moving away from you. Say: I take back what is mine. You keep what is yours. Put a pinch of salt on each cut end. Then let both candles burn down while you stay in the room. Never leave them alone, never blow them out, and if you must step out, snuff them and relight them when you are back, white first.
6. Two directions for the remains
Their half of the cord, their slip and the black wax leave your house that night: a bin that is not yours, a crossroads, or running water. Your half of the cord goes in a drawer until the pull is gone, and then goes too. The white wax gets wrapped in cloth and kept somewhere near where you sleep. Then stand in the shower and pour a bowl of warm water with a handful of salt, and hyssop if you have it, over yourself from the head down. Do not rinse it off.
How to know if a cord cutting spell worked
By absence. The signs of a cut that held are things that stop happening, and most people notice them a week late because nobody notices a thing they did not do. The first signs tend to show in the second or third week, and a cut that holds has settled within three lunar cycles.
- You sleep through. The three in the morning waking stops first, usually within days.
- The unchecked profile. You realize you have not looked in a while, and you did not decide not to.
- The name without the lurch. Someone mentions them and nothing in your chest moves. You are mildly surprised by that.
- The last pull. They get in touch, out of nowhere, about nothing. This is the cord coming loose from their end. You do not have to answer.
- The memory becomes a memory. You think of them the way you think of a city you used to live in. Present in the past, and no longer running.
The candles tell you the night of the cut how clean it was. Rule out the draft and the long wick first, and read the full grammar in how to read a candle burn. These are the patterns that belong to cutting work.

| What you see | What it tends to mean for a cord cutting |
|---|---|
| Black candle burns clean to the base | The cord is cut. Keep your hands off it and it stays cut. |
| Black candle leaves soot down the glass | Part of the tie is still attached. A second cut after a week, carved with the pull alone. |
| Black candle leaves a thick ring of wax | The cord was thicker than you knew. Not a failure. A second sitting. |
| Black candle goes out on its own | Stubborn. Relight once. If it goes out again, the cord wants a cleansing before a second cut. |
| White candle low for a while, then tall | Your attention coming home. The best burn in this working. |
| White candle stays low to the end | You are more drained than you knew. Rest before anything else, then cut again. |
| Black wax runs toward the white plate | They are still pulling. Keep every door closed for the rest of the cycle. |
What the other person feels, honestly
Not much, and nothing that harms them. A cord cutting works on your end of the line. What they sometimes notice is a vague shift, and the most common way it shows is the message out of nowhere a few days after the cut. That is the cord pulling one last time as it comes loose.
People worry about this, so I will say it plainly. Nothing is done to them. Their life goes on. If anything, a cord cutting is kinder to them than the alternative, which is a person checking their every move from a distance for another year.
The things that tie it back
- Answering the last pull. One reply and the cord is knotted again, usually tighter.
- Checking to see if it worked. Looking at their profile to test the cut is picking the cord back up to see if it is still there.
- Cutting while hoping. A cut made by someone still reaching grows back inside the cycle. Be honest before, not after.
- Keeping their half. Their half of the cord in your drawer is their name in your drawer. Out, the same night.
- The closure conversation. It is a re-entry with better manners. The candle already gave you closure. Take it.
I look first: what I find, and what I will not sell you
Before I cut anything for anyone, I burn a white candle over their first name and watch how it stands. A cord shows in the burn. So does the absence of one. When there is nothing there, I say so, and I refund the difference, because that answer is worth having and it is the one most of this trade will never give you.
What I will not do is find a curse on you. I do not tell people they are cursed, because that sentence is the oldest sales line in the business. If the looking candle shows something that was sent, which is rare, the report tells you so, and what was sent goes back the way it came with nothing added. If it shows a cord, I cut it. If it shows a person who is tired and grieving and not attached to anything at all, I say that too, and I would rather lose the sale than cut a cord that was never there.
The report I wrote last week was for someone certain they had been worked on by an ex. The looking candle burned clean and tall. What was there was grief, and grief does not need scissors. It needs time and the salt bath, and that is what I wrote.
When cutting is the wrong working
Cord cutting is for taking your attention back. The moment the wish is for them to feel something, come back, or leave a place you share, the scissors are the wrong tool.
| If what you need is | Then the working is |
|---|---|
| Them back, and the ache to stop in the meantime | Reconciliation spell, and an honest evening with should I get back with my ex first |
| Them to feel what they walked away from | Regret spell, which turns the mirror and cuts on your side too |
| Someone else out of the middle of your relationship | Third party removal |
| Something that was sent at you taken off and sent home | Return to sender, after looking |
| Everything stuck, and no single person behind it | Road opener |
| To know what is on you before you cut anything | A brutally honest reading |
Grief for someone who has died is not a cord in the sense this working means, and I do not cut it. What helps there is the salt bath and time.
When I cast it for you
The method at my altar is the one above, with the looking candle first. If there is a cord, I cut it the same day your order comes in: salt, a black glass candle over their name, a white one over yours, the cord cut clean with the scissors that cut nothing else, and the salt and hyssop bath written out for you to take that night. If something was sent, it goes back the way it came, with nothing added. If I find nothing, I say that too, and refund the difference. Order before 6 pm ET and the candles go on the altar tonight.

What comes back is a photograph of both candles after the burn and a written report: what the looking candle showed, what I cut, how each candle burned and what I read in it, and what to do for the rest of the cycle so the cut holds. If you have questions after reading it, reply and I answer.
- Single Candle for one attachment you can name. A person, a place, an ex.
- Double Casting if the pattern is wider than one person. The first candle finds and cuts, the second cleanses and seals the house.
You send your first name, and the name of the person attached to it if you know who it is. Birth dates and charts have no place in this, and the story is optional. Within thirty days, if the work that comes back is not what this page describes, I cast again or refund you.
