Tarot card meaning · Wands Three of Wands tarot card meaning

The Three of Wands is the card of waiting for what you sent out to come back. Upright it means progress, expansion and returns on the way. Reversed it means delays: the ships are late, not lost. In a yes or no reading it is a yes, in weeks rather than days.

Upright

Three of Wands upright meaning

A man stands on a cliff with his back to us, one hand resting on one of three wands planted in the ground. He looks out over a wide bay where small ships are sailing. The sky is gold. He has already sent the ships out. Now he is watching for them.

Upright, the Three of Wands means the effort is made and the results are coming. You made the move, sent the message, applied, asked. Something is on its way back to you. It means progress, and a wider view than you had before.

The thing to notice is distance. Those ships are far out. This card brings a yes, but at the pace of sailing, not the pace of a text. When someone asks me for timing and gets this card, I say weeks.

Reversed

Three of Wands reversed meaning

Reversed, the ships are still out there but the weather has turned. Most often it means delays. Things you set in motion are slower than you hoped. A message not answered yet. A plan held up by someone else.

It can also mean frustration that has you about to give up just before something lands. Or a plan that was too small to bring much back.

It is not a no. It is not yet. Late is not the same as lost, and this card is very clear about that.

Love and relationships

Three of Wands in love.

If you are single

You have put yourself out there, and something is coming back from it. Not overnight. Keep your options open and give it time to arrive.

In a relationship

The relationship is growing past where it started. Plans for the future, maybe distance or travel involved. Upright it moves forward. Reversed it is held up, and the waiting is putting strain on you both.

About an ex

About an ex, the Three of Wands means what you sent out has not been ignored. A reply, a reconnection, or at least some movement may come, but slowly. Do not keep sending more ships after the first ones.

How they feel

Three of Wands as feelings

As feelings, the Three of Wands means they see a future with you and are looking ahead. Interest, hope, some patience. They may feel things are progressing, even if from your side it looks slow.

What to do

Three of Wands as advice

Wait well. You have done your part. Keep an eye on the horizon without standing on the cliff all day. Use the time for something of your own, so you are not only waiting when the ships come in.

The question everyone asks

Does the Three of Wands mean they will come back, and how long will it take?

It leans yes, and it is one of the few cards that hints at timing: weeks, not days. The Three of Wands shows something already sent out and on its way back. Reversed there are delays, sometimes long ones, but the card does not show a loss. If you have reached out already, give it time before you reach out again.

In my readings

When Three of Wands comes up for me.

The Three of Wands is the card that tells me to slow the client down. Most people who get it have already done something: sent the message, had the work done, made the call. Now they want to know why nothing has happened yet. The answer is usually that it is on its way and it is far out.

When the reversed card shows delays, I look for what is holding the ships up. Sometimes it is just time. Sometimes there is something in the road: a third person, a situation, an old block that keeps things from arriving. That is the kind of block road opener work is for, clearing the water so what was already sent can come in.

If this card is about someone

One card shows a corner. I read the room.

When a card keeps coming up about the same person, the question under it is bigger than its meaning. These are the two ways I can help with it today.
