Upright

King of Wands upright meaning

A king sits on a throne decorated with lions and salamanders, turned slightly to one side, holding a tall staff that is sprouting leaves. His robe is covered in salamanders too, and a small live one sits on the ground by his feet. He looks like he is about to stand up. He is not resting on the throne. He is using it.

As a person, the King of Wands is a natural leader. Confident, ambitious, generous when things are going their way. They have a plan for their life and talk about it with total certainty. They make people want to follow them. They can also be impatient with anyone who slows them down.

As a situation, the card means take charge. Make the decision, pitch the idea, ask for the bigger thing. Hesitation costs you here and boldness does not.

Reversed

King of Wands reversed meaning

Reversed, the king has stopped listening. Most often it means ego. Someone who has to be right, has to be in charge, has to win the argument. Maybe the other person. Maybe you.

It can also mean big vision with no follow through, or a leader who expects loyalty and gives little back. A boss who takes the credit. A partner whose plans always come first.

I read it as a no. Not because the drive is wrong, but because nothing moves forward while someone refuses to bend.

Love and relationships

King of Wands in love.

If you are single

Someone confident and ambitious, who knows what they want and goes after it. Or the card asks you to be that person: say what you want out loud, instead of waiting to see what you get.

In a relationship

One of you leads and the other follows, and upright that works. There is a shared plan and someone driving it. Reversed, the leading has turned into control, and it is time to say so.

About an ex

About an ex, the King of Wands often describes them: strong, proud, used to getting their way. If they come back, it will be on their terms, unless you say clearly what yours are.

How they feel

King of Wands as feelings

As feelings, the King of Wands means they see you as part of their plans. They feel drawn to you and protective of you, and they want to be the one who makes things happen. There is pride in it. They want to be admired by you as much as they admire you.

What to do

King of Wands as advice

Lead. Decide what you want and make the first move. Be bold, and leave room for other people to have a say. Vision works better with a few people willing to follow it.

The question everyone asks

Does the King of Wands mean he will come back, or that they are too proud to?

Pride is the part to watch. Upright, this is someone who acts once they decide, and if they want you back they will make a clear move. Reversed, they are too proud to admit they want anything, and they will wait for you to come to them. The card does not promise either. It says pride is the gate.

In my readings

When King of Wands comes up for me.

The King of Wands comes up often in career readings, and that is where I find it most useful. When it is upright, I look for the move the client is not making: the application, the raise, the business idea. The card is very clear that playing safe is the wrong strategy right now.

If the spread shows doors that keep staying shut, that is where career work comes in, to get the right people to notice and say yes. In love readings, I look at whether the King is the client or the other person. A lot of the reading turns on who is actually holding the staff.

If this card is about someone

One card shows a corner. I read the room.

When a card keeps coming up about the same person, the question under it is bigger than its meaning. These are the two ways I can help with it today.
