Everything has gone wrong in the same direction for a month, you are tired in a way sleep does not touch, and someone has already told you it sounds like a curse. The honest signs someone put a spell on you are rarer and plainer than that list: a start date you can name, a falling out just before it, and something physical. Most people who bring me the question are exhausted, grieving or living next to a person who treats them badly. I rule those out first, out loud, and I never find a curse that costs extra to lift.
This is the subject where my trade does its worst work, so I am going to be plainer here than anywhere else on the site. What people bring me and what it usually is, the ordinary causes I check first, the few signs I do take seriously, a home check with salt, an egg and one white candle, what a return to sender actually sends back, and the order I would do all of it in.
What are the signs someone put a spell on you?
The list people bring me is nearly always the same, and every item on it is real. Exhaustion no sleep fixes. Nightmares, or waking at three with a feeling. Things breaking in the house, one after another. Fights starting from nothing. A smell, a cold spot, a sense of being watched. One person stuck in your head. Each of those also has an ordinary cause, and the ordinary cause is nearly always the one.
In the messages that reach me the list arrives almost word for word, and the person sending it has not slept properly in weeks. I do not think they are imagining it. The tiredness is real, the fights are real, the dead phone and the cracked tooth are real. What I question is the jump from the list to a stranger with a candle, because work takes a name, a flame and intention, and most of the people you suspect have never lit one.
All of those together still do not make a curse. They make a person who needs a different month. The signs that do make me look harder come further down, and there are only five of them.
What I rule out before I look for a candle
Sleep, grief, money, the person in your house, the season and your body, in that order. I do this out loud with people, and it is the least mystical hour of my work and the most useful. Most of the time the answer is in the first two.
Sleep. Three months of broken sleep produces exhaustion, nightmares, waking at three, fights and a feeling of being watched. All of it, with no help from anyone. If you have not slept properly since the thing happened, that is the thing.
Grief and endings. A breakup, a death, a move, a job lost. Grief does not announce itself as grief. It arrives as bad luck and a heavy house.
Money. A run of things breaking is often a run of things that were already old, noticed all at once because this is the month you cannot replace them.
The person. Sometimes the one you suspect is simply awful to you, with no magic involved. A partner who makes you feel watched, a mother who makes you feel small, a boss who makes every day a fight. That is a relationship, and it needs a different kind of cutting than a candle gives.
The season. Late autumn makes the whole list worse. If it started in October, start there.
Your body. Exhaustion with no cause, weight changing, a thirst you cannot explain, a fog that does not lift: a doctor first, before salt, before me. I will not read on health and I would not want you to skip the appointment for a candle.

Is it a love spell on you, or an ordinary ache?
This is the question I get most, and the hardest to answer honestly. Someone you had let go of comes back into your head out of nowhere, with a pull that does not match what you think of them. Three things produce that, and they feel identical from the inside.
| What it might be | How you tell |
|---|---|
| Work cast for that person, or by them | They reappeared recently. They have reason to want you back and are the type to pay for it. The pull started on a day you can roughly name |
| A season of looking back | It is a Mercury retrograde, an anniversary, the month you met. Half the people you know are thinking about an ex this week too |
| Loneliness wearing their face | Nothing changed on their side. Something changed on yours: a breakup, a quiet stretch, a bad month |
The first is possible and the other two are more likely. Work cast to override a person tends to burn badly and fade, which is one reason I will not cast it, and I have written about why in do love spells work. What reaches you more reliably is the person themselves, back in your messages. Watch their behavior before you go looking for a candle. If they have not actually reappeared, the pull is yours, and a cord cutting answers it better than any cleansing.
The signs someone put a spell on you that I do take seriously
Five things, and I want two of them together before I act. They are about dates, objects and aim, because sent work is a physical act by a particular person, and physical acts leave traces.
- It started on a date you can name, and just before that date there was a falling out with someone who works this way, or who talks about it.
- Something physical. A line of powder or dirt across your step that you did not put there. A jar, a bundle, nails and hair, a doll, a photograph of you that comes back with marks or burns. People who send work very often leave something, because the something is part of the work.
- They told you. Sideways, nearly always. You will see. I have taken care of it. A text with a photograph of a candle and no caption.
- It is one thing, and it is theirs to reach. Sent work is aimed. Your relationship, your money, your sleep, and often the part of your life that person could see or touch: your car, your doorstep, your mail. A curse on your whole life is exhaustion. A sudden collapse in one place that was fine is worth a closer look.
- The candle says so. When I cast an uncrossing for someone, the burn tells me more than the story did. Heavy black soot in the first inch of glass, a flame that lies down and fights before it clears, wax that will not run. I do not treat that as proof. I treat it as a reason to take the rest seriously.
One more that is not on most lists: it eases when you leave the house for a few days. Sent work is usually set on a place as much as a person. Exhaustion travels with you.
How to check at home: salt, the egg and one white candle
This is the check I would run before I ordered anything from anyone, me included. It works whether or not something was sent, which is why I start here, and it gives you a candle to read instead of a feeling to argue with.
What you need
- Salt, a few handfuls. Sea or kosher. The oldest clearing material there is, and what the uncrossing bath is made of.
- One white chime candle in a glass or on a plate. White because it shows soot plainly and because clearing work is done in white, never in a color that asks for anything.
- A raw egg and a clear glass of water, if you want the old check. My grandmother’s, and I still use it.
- A broom, to sweep toward the door and out of it.
- Paper and a pen, to write what you saw before you decide what it meant.
- An hour with the windows openable and nobody interrupting. A clear surface, nothing above the flame, never leave it burning alone.
1. Write the date and the person before anything else
One line: when it started, and who, if anyone, fell out with you just before. If you cannot fill in either, write that too. Writing it first stops you fitting the story to the wax afterwards.
2. The salt bath, poured from the head down
A warm bath with a good handful of salt, and you do not just sit in it. Pour it over your head with a cup, again and again, and let it run off you. Uncrossing goes downward, head to feet to drain. Do not rinse after.
3. Sweep toward the door and out
Every floor, toward the front door and over the threshold. Then open the windows for an hour, even in cold.
4. Light the white candle in the room you feel it most
Trim the wick to a quarter inch, close the door against drafts, light it, and watch the first ten minutes. Say out loud, once, that whatever is on you or in this house that is not yours goes now. Then let it burn to the end while you do something ordinary nearby.
5. The egg, if you want it
Roll a raw egg slowly over your whole body, head to feet, then crack it into the glass of water and leave it a few minutes. People read the threads and clouds that form. I will be honest: egg white does things in water no matter what, and I do not read it as a verdict. What the egg gives you is an ending you did with your own hands. Pour it down the toilet and rinse the glass with salt.
6. Photograph the glass in the morning and write three lines
In daylight, before you clean it, from the side and from above. Then write: what the flame did, where the soot sat, what the wax did. Read it against the line from step one.
7. Decide on the evidence, once
Date, person, object, and now the candle. Two or more of the serious signs and a candle that fought: act, in the order further down. One sign and a clean glass: you were tired, and the bath still did you good.
How to read the check candle
A white candle in a still room with a trimmed wick tells you plainly whether there was anything to clear. Rule out the room first: cheap wax and a long wick soot whatever you ask of them, and a draft makes any flame dance. The grammar for flames, soot and wax, in full, is in how to read a candle burn.
| What you see | The ordinary cause | What I would do |
|---|---|---|
| Tall steady flame, clean glass, little wax left | Nothing was on you. You are tired | Sleep, and keep the salt by the bath for the month |
| Heavy soot in the first inch, then clean | Something at the start that the cleansing lifted | Repeat the bath once in a week. Done |
| Soot all the way down the glass | Resistance through the whole burn | Cleanse again, and if the serious signs are also there, a return to sender |
| Flame lies down low and will not stand | Weight on the work. Often the person who lit it, exhausted | Rest first. Light a second white candle in three days |
| Goes out on its own, door closed, wick not drowned | A wall. I relight once | If it goes out again, write it down and treat it as a reason to look harder |
| Crackling or popping | Someone talking about you, which is often ordinary gossip | Note it, and nothing else |
| Thick ring of wax left at the bottom | The clearing did not finish | A second candle, set from what the first showed |
A candle that burns clean after a salt bath is the best outcome this whole page has. Believe it. Most of the glasses I have burned for this question came back exactly like that.
What does a return to sender spell do, and what does it send back?
It turns what was sent around and walks it home, with nothing added. An uncrossing bath takes it off you. A black candle burns what was sent. A small mirror set behind the candle faces it back the way it came. Whoever sent it gets their own work and nothing of mine, which is what return means.
I want to be exact about that, because people arrive here wanting the other thing. If what you want is for the person to suffer, this is not the working and I am not the witch. A return sends back only what was sent. If they sent nothing, nothing goes anywhere, and work cast at nobody burns strangely, which is one more reason I look before I lift. The candle, the bath and the mirror, step by step, are in the return to sender spell guide.
What to do in order, and how long it takes
Stop feeding it, cleanse, get rid of the object, cut the person off quietly, return what was sent only if something was, then protect lightly and stop. Most people notice the first signs in the second or third week, and the first sign is sleep. The rest of it settles within three lunar cycles.
- Stop feeding it. Sent work and the fear of sent work both run on attention. Pick one evening to deal with it and live your life until then.
- Cleanse, the way the steps above describe. This helps whether or not anything was there.
- Get rid of the object, if there was one. Gloves or a bag, into a bin away from the house or buried off your property. Salt the place it sat.
- Cut the person off, quietly. No confrontation, no message, no announcement. Block, mute, change the locks if they had a key.
- Return to sender, only if there was a thing, a date and a person.
- Protect, lightly. Salt across the thresholds, a white candle on the first of the month, the bath repeated once. Then stop.
The signs it is lifting come in this order: you sleep through, the house feels lighter when you walk in, the run of breakages simply stops, the fights do not start, and one morning you notice you have not thought about that person in days. What stretches all of it is checking. Searching for new symptoms every night is the attention the thing was running on.
The mistakes that keep it on you
- Searching symptoms at midnight. The list online is written to fit everyone, and at midnight it fits you perfectly.
- Confronting them. It hands over the attention and, if they did nothing, makes you the problem.
- Paying the person who found it. Nobody honest discovers a curse during a reading and quotes a price to lift it. That script is the most common one in this trade, and how to tell a real spell caster from a scam walks through it.
- Keeping the object. In a drawer, as evidence. It is still in your house.
- Casting back in anger. Adding your own to what was sent turns a return into a feud.
- Protection as a hobby. Salt on every sill, a candle every night, a new ward each week. At that point the fear is the work.
When the trouble is a person, and the working is a different one
Much of what arrives under this question is a different working, and the honest thing is to say which.
| If, underneath it | Then |
|---|---|
| Someone’s hold on you, with no candle involved | A cord cutting, which cuts the pull on your side and harms nobody |
| Grief that has had no room | People who knew them, a plate set for them, and if you need to say it to someone, a reading |
| A body that is tired for a reason | A doctor, before anything on this page |
| A year of closed doors with no person behind them | A road opener, which clears your side of the way |
| Wanting them to hurt for what they did | Not here. Turning work back is as far as I go |
When I cast a return to sender for you
I look first, and I tell you what I actually find. If there is nothing there, you get that answer, and that is the best outcome this listing has. If there is something, I take it off the same day: the uncrossing bath written out for you to do that night, the black candle at my altar, the mirror set to turn it. Whatever was sent goes back with nothing added.
- Single Candle, $19, to look and to lift one thing.
- Double Casting, $29, when this has been running a long time. The first candle uncrosses, the second seals the house so it does not come back through the same door.
Same Day Rush is $9 more and puts your candle first on the altar tonight. You send your first name, what has been going wrong, and when it started. No birth date, no charts. Order before 6 pm ET and it is set tonight. What comes back is a photograph of the candle after the burn, a written report of what I found and read in the glass, and instructions for the week after. Reply with questions and I answer. An outcome is not something I promise, and nobody honest promises one. If, inside thirty days, you tell me the work was not what I described here, I re-cast or refund. Card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, through the checkout on this site, and the statement reads SABLEWITCH.
Choose your return to sender casting, or read the full listing first.
