Everything has gone wrong in the same direction since a date you can name, and you have started to wonder if someone did this on purpose. A return to sender spell takes off whatever was laid on you and sends it back the way it came, with nothing added. Before anything goes back, I look. More often than not what I find is exhaustion rather than a curse, and I say so. When it is something, this is the working.
Nobody is going to find a curse on you in this guide and charge you to lift it.
What does a return to sender spell do?
It uncrosses you, turns the work around, and seals the house, in that order. The uncrossing washes off what you are carrying so you are not holding it while it goes. The return burns a black candle in front of a mirror turned outward, so that whatever was sent walks back to where it started. The seal closes the door behind it.
The order matters and most home versions get it backwards. People light the black candle first, while the thing is still on them, and wonder why they feel worse for a week. You cannot send back what you are still wearing. The bath comes first, every time.
What the working does not do matters as much as what it does. It adds nothing. It does not punish and it does not hit back harder. If what arrived was a bad week aimed at you, a bad week goes home. If nothing arrived, nothing goes anywhere. That is the difference between a return and a curse, and the reason a clean return cannot backfire.
In the return candles I burned this autumn, most burned clean to the base with nothing in the glass, and those reports all said the same thing: there is nothing on you, go and sleep.
What I rule out before I agree anything was sent
Sleep, grief, money, a season, and a person who is simply unkind to you. Every symptom people bring me for a curse is also a symptom of one of those, and the ordinary cause is the real one far more often. I go through the list out loud before I light anything, and so should you.
The list people bring is nearly always the same. Exhaustion no sleep fixes. Nightmares, or waking at three. Things breaking in a row. Fights from nothing. A sense of being watched. Thinking constantly about one person. All of it is real, and all of it is what three months of bad sleep after a breakup looks like from the inside.
What I take seriously is narrower. It started on a date you can name, and just before that date there was a falling out with someone who works this way or talks about it. There is something physical: a powder across your step, a jar, a doll, a photograph of you returned with marks. They told you, sideways. You’ll see. And it is one part of your life that has collapsed while the rest goes on, because sent work is aimed and exhaustion is not. The long version of that list, and the ordinary causes beside each item, is in signs someone put a spell on you.
Two or more of those and I would act. One, and I would cleanse and wait. None, and the kindest thing I can tell you is that nobody did this, which is also the cheapest.
Hyssop, salt, the black candle and the mirror box: why each
Hyssop and salt take it off you, lemon cuts it, the black candle carries it, and the mirror turns it around. Each one does a single job.
Hyssop is the purging herb of the old texts, the one the psalm asks to be washed with. A handful steeped in warm water goes in the bath. Rosemary stands in if you have no hyssop, and it is a protective herb in its own right.
Salt draws out and holds. It is in the bath, it seals the threshold, and it wipes the mirror when the work is done.
Lemon cuts. The juice of one goes in the bath water so that what the salt draws out is cut loose rather than loosened and left hanging.
The black candle takes and holds whatever you give it. In return work it carries the word return and the petition, and its remains leave the house because they are not yours.
The mirror is the road home. It stands behind the candle, facing away from you, toward the door or the window, so that what comes at the candle is turned and sent back along the line it arrived on. It never faces you. A mirror facing you in this work sends your own candle back at you.
The mirror box is what I use at my altar when there is a thing attached. A small box lined inside with mirror, the petition or the object placed inside it, so that whatever was aimed at you is reflected back on itself from every side at once. The candle burns on the lid. At home, a hand mirror behind the candle does the job for most cases.
Saturday, the waning moon and the hour: when to send it back
Saturday, on a waning moon, after dark. Saturday belongs to Saturn, who governs boundaries and the line between what is yours and what is not. The waning moon takes away. The dark of the moon, the last two nights before the new one, suits a cross that has been on you for months.
The hour is after dark because the bath comes first and both want a quiet house. What I will not do is set a return on the night you found the thing on your step. Wait one day. Take the bath that night, sleep, and burn the candle the next evening. A return cast in the first hour of fear carries the fear with it, and fear is something added.
If the moon is waxing and the week has been bad enough, do not wait for it. A return done calmly on the wrong moon is worth more than one done frightened on the right one.
How to cast a return to sender spell at home
Salt, a lemon, a handful of hyssop or rosemary, one black chime candle, a small mirror, and about two hours plus a bath beforehand. This is the working I set at my altar, with the mirror box swapped for a hand mirror and the looking left to you.
What you need
- Salt, a few handfuls.
- One lemon and a handful of hyssop or rosemary.
- One black chime candle and a few drops of olive oil.
- A small mirror. A hand mirror or a compact that stands on its own.
- A square of plain paper, a pen and a pin to carve with.
- A fireproof plate on a clear, steady surface, away from curtains, paper and pets.
1. Uncross first
Dissolve a handful of salt in a bowl of warm water with the juice of the lemon and the hyssop or rosemary steeped in it. After a normal shower, pour it over yourself from the head down, saying once: what is not mine leaves me. Do not rinse it off. Pat dry. Pour what is left in the bowl out of the front door, away from the house.
2. Write the petition
Write to whoever sent this, or a first name only if you are certain beyond doubt. Under it: what you sent returns to you as it came, nothing added. Nothing else. Fold the paper away from you, twice, because this is sending work.
3. Dress and carve the candle
Rub a few drops of oil from the middle of the candle out toward each end, away from you. Carve return down the length of the candle, the first letter at the top where the flame reaches first, so the word is read out and away as the candle burns.
4. Set the mirror
Slide the folded petition under the plate. Stand the candle on the plate and the mirror behind it, facing away from you and toward the door or window. If there is an object, a powder, a photograph, put it in a small box with the petition and stand the candle on the lid.
5. Light it, say it once, and stay
Light the candle and say the sentence from the petition once. Then stop talking and watch which way the flame leans. Stay in the room until it is done. If it goes out on its own, do not relight it. Pour the salt line at the door first, then relight once. Never blow it out, and if you must step away, snuff it and relight it when you are back.
6. Seal and clear
When the candle is done, pour a line of salt across the inside of your front door and leave it for three days. Wrap the wax and the petition and take them out of the house that night, to a crossroads or running water, and not to your own bin. Wipe the mirror with salt water and keep it out of the bedroom for a week. Wash your hands to the elbow.
How the candle and the mirror read in return work
In return work the candle tells you how much was there and how easily it let go, and the mirror tells you where it went. Before you read anything, rule out a draft and a wick left too long. Can I do a return to sender spell for someone else?
Yes, with their first name and what has been going wrong and since when. Protective work is one of the few things I think is fair to set for a person who has not asked, because it only takes off and sends back, and it adds nothing to anyone. I still look first.
Two rules. If the looking shows nothing on them, I will tell you that, and the kindest thing you can do afterwards is to stop telling them they are cursed, because the fear of sent work does most of what sent work would. And for a child in your house, the child’s name goes on no candle. The working for a child is the house: the floors swept toward the door, the salt at the threshold, the bath for you. I do not set work on anyone under eighteen, and that includes protective work.
What comes back first, and when
The first sign is sleep, and it tends to come within days. Most people have their first signs in the second or third week, and the full turn, if there is one, is done within three lunar cycles.
- Sleep. Through the night, or at least past three.
- The run breaks. A week in which nothing breaks, nothing is lost, nobody picks a fight from nothing.
- The watched feeling fades. The room feels like a room again.
- The source shows itself. Sometimes the person you suspected goes very quiet. Sometimes they have a visibly bad week. I do not celebrate that and I did not cause it. It is their own work arriving home.
- The house is yours. You stop thinking about any of this.
What is not a sign: dreaming about them. That is your own fear turning over, and it needs the bath, not another candle. What stretches it is contact with the person you suspect.
What makes it come back through the same door
- Naming the wrong person. A return aimed at someone who sent nothing is the only way this work does harm. To whoever sent this is always safe.
- Adding your anger. Anything you add to the candle rides home with the return and comes back with it. Cast it calm or do not cast it.
- Keeping the object. The powder, the jar, the photograph. Out, gloved, that night. Not kept to show anyone.
- Confronting them. A fight is contact, and contact is the door. Silence is harder for a person who works this way than any argument.
- Skipping the seal. Without the salt line, the way back is the way it came. Three days, inside the front door.
- Casting it monthly out of fear. A return every month is a person keeping the thing alive with their own hands. One return, one seal, and then live.
Nothing added: the line I will not cross
What was sent goes back as it arrived, and nothing of mine goes with it. I do not cast curses, I do not cast anything meant to make a person suffer, and if the request is for them to hurt, the answer is no. A return is a door closed, not a blow struck.
The other line is the one this trade crosses most. I will not find a curse on you. If you come to me with the list, I look first. When the looking candle shows nothing, you hear that, and I would rather lose the sale than cleanse a person of their own tiredness for a fee. The report I wrote last week was a looking candle that burned clean and tall for someone certain an old friend had worked on them, and the useful sentence in it was nothing is on you, and the friend is just unkind. A cord cutting was what they needed, and I said so.
When a return is the wrong working
A return is for something that was laid on you by someone, on purpose. With no date, no person and nothing physical, there is nothing to return.

When I cast it for you
At my altar I follow the method above, and the looking candle always comes first. If there is nothing there, you get that answer, and nothing is burned. If there is something, I take it off: the salt and hyssop bath written out for you to take the same night, a black glass candle carved and burned in the mirror box, the seal set at the end. Whatever was sent goes back without anything added. Order before 6 pm ET and the looking candle is lit tonight.
What comes back is a photograph of the candle after the burn and a written report: what the looking candle showed, what I took off and sent home, how it burned and which way the flame leaned, and the instructions for the week after. Reply if anything is unclear, and I answer.
