Upright

Four of Cups upright meaning

A young man sits under a tree with his arms and legs crossed. In front of him on the grass stand three cups. He is staring at them, unimpressed. From a cloud beside him a hand holds out a fourth cup, and he does not look at it.

Upright, the Four of Cups means something is being offered and ignored. Not out of malice, out of tiredness. Boredom, sulking, or a mood so heavy that good things do not register. The person in the card is not suffering. He is checked out.

It comes up for people who have been disappointed enough that they stopped noticing. And sometimes it is about the other person, who has gone flat and is not seeing what is in front of them.

Reversed

Four of Cups reversed meaning

Reversed, he turns his head. Most often it means waking up from a slump. You start noticing what you have been offered, and you reach for it this time.

It can also mean someone who withdrew is coming back out. A partner who went quiet starts to engage again. A friend who drifted makes contact.

The answer reversed is yes. The cup was always there. Now someone is looking at it.

Love and relationships

Four of Cups in love.

If you are single

There is interest coming toward you and you may be missing it because you are tired of dating or still stuck on someone. Look around. The cup is beside you, not in front.

In a relationship

Someone in the relationship has gone flat. Not unhappy exactly, just checked out. The card asks you to notice it, and to name it gently before it turns into distance.

About an ex

About an ex, upright it often means they have withdrawn and are not engaging, or that you are ignoring a chance to move on. Reversed, they start paying attention again.

How they feel

Four of Cups as feelings

As feelings, the Four of Cups means they are withdrawn. Not angry, not in love, just closed and bored with their own life right now. It is less about you than it looks. They are not seeing much of anything clearly.

What to do

Four of Cups as advice

Look up. Notice one thing you are being offered that you have dismissed. If you are the one who checked out, you do not have to pretend to be excited. You only have to look.

The question everyone asks

Does the Four of Cups mean he lost interest, or that they will come back?

Upright it means they are withdrawn and not reaching for anything right now, you included. That is not the same as gone, but it is not a return either. Reversed, it means they are waking up and noticing what they missed, and a return becomes possible.

In my readings

When Four of Cups comes up for me.

The Four of Cups is a card I take as a signal to slow the client down. When someone has gone cold, clients want to do something big. With this card, big gestures usually bounce off. The person is not ready to look.

What I do instead is find out what is actually happening on their side, without the hope or the fear in it. That is what a brutally honest reading is for: telling the client whether the person is checked out of them, or out of everything, because the answer changes what is worth doing next.
