Upright

Five of Cups upright meaning

A figure in a long black cloak stands with their head down, looking at three cups knocked over on the ground, their contents spilled. Behind them, unseen, two cups still stand upright. Further back a river runs, and a bridge leads across it to a house.

Upright, the Five of Cups means loss, and the grief that follows. A breakup, a chance missed, words that cannot be taken back. The grief is real and the card does not tell you to hurry through it.

But look at the two cups. Look at the bridge. The figure is so focused on what spilled that they cannot see what is still there, or the way home.

Reversed

Five of Cups reversed meaning

Reversed, the figure begins to turn around. Most often it means the worst of the grief is passing. You start to see what you still have, and you are ready to cross the bridge.

It can also mean forgiveness. Of yourself, of them, of the situation. Or a slow moving on that you did not notice until it was already happening.

The answer reversed is yes, slowly. What was lost stays lost, but what is left is enough to go on with.

Love and relationships

Five of Cups in love.

If you are single

You may still be grieving an old relationship. That is fine. The card asks you to notice that there are still good things around you, and that the grief will not last forever.

In a relationship

There is sadness between you. A disappointment, a loss, something that hurt. It needs to be acknowledged, not fixed overnight. Focus on what is still standing.

About an ex

About an ex, the Five of Cups means there is regret, maybe on both sides. It does not promise a return. It says the loss is real, and that what you do now matters more than what spilled.

How they feel

Five of Cups as feelings

As feelings, the Five of Cups means they feel sad and regretful about you. Something was lost between you and they are sitting with that. It is heavy, and it often means they think about what could have been.

What to do

Five of Cups as advice

Grieve, and then turn around. Count what is still standing. Pick one of those two cups, a friend, a plan, a part of yourself, and put your hands around it.

The question everyone asks

Does the Five of Cups mean he regrets losing me, or that they will come back?

It does often mean regret, and the regret can be theirs. But the Five of Cups is about loss that has already happened, not about undoing it. They may miss you badly. Whether that becomes a return depends on whether they can cross the bridge, and the card does not promise they will.

In my readings

When Five of Cups comes up for me.

When the Five of Cups comes up, I try to work out whose grief it is. Sometimes it is the client's, and the reading is about helping them stop staring at the spilled cups. Sometimes it is the other person's, and it shows they are finally feeling what they lost.

When the regret belongs to the other side and the client wants them to really feel it, there is work I do for that. Making them regret what they did is not about revenge. It is about making sure the person who left understands what they walked away from.
