Upright

King of Swords upright meaning

A king sits facing straight out of the card on a high stone throne. He holds his sword upright, tilted a little to one side. He wears blue robes and a crown. The back of his throne is carved with butterflies and crescent moons. Behind him the sky is clear above a line of low trees and clouds, and two birds fly in the distance. He looks at you directly. He is not in a hurry.

As a person, the King of Swords is someone with authority who earned it by being right more often than not. A lawyer, a doctor, a boss, a parent who sets rules and keeps them. They are fair, logical and honest, and they can seem distant. In love they show care by being reliable and telling you the truth, not by grand gestures.

As a card, it says decide with your head. Look at the facts, not the hopes. Get the contract, the number, the answer in writing. This is the card that wants the job offer read in full before you sign it, and it usually means a good decision is within reach if you do.

Reversed

King of Swords reversed meaning

Reversed, the sword turns against the people he is meant to protect. Reason becomes control. Arguments are won with logic and lost with kindness. Someone tells you that you are being emotional, as if that settles it.

It can describe a person who is cold, manipulative or abusing a position: a manager who twists the rules, a partner who always has a reason why you are wrong. It can also mean judgment clouded, a decision made from pride while pretending it is logic.

This is a no. Not because thinking is the problem, but because the thinking here is being used to win, not to see clearly.

Love and relationships

King of Swords in love.

If you are single

Someone grounded and clear may come into your life, likely older or more established. The card also asks you to bring your head into dating. Notice what someone does consistently, not what they promise once.

In a relationship

The relationship needs an honest, calm conversation about facts: money, plans, who does what. Fairness matters more than romance right now. Done well, it makes things much steadier.

About an ex

About an ex, the King of Swords often means they have thought it through and reached a decision, and are sticking to it. If there is a door open, it is through a direct, adult conversation, not through emotion.

How they feel

King of Swords as feelings

As feelings, the King of Swords means they think highly of you and are considering you seriously, with their head. They may not say much about how they feel. They are deciding whether it makes sense. Respect is clearly there.

What to do

King of Swords as advice

Make a decision based on what you know, not on what you fear or hope. Ask for the facts in writing. Be fair to yourself the way you would be fair to someone else. Then stick with the decision.

The question everyone asks

Does the King of Swords mean he still thinks about me, or that they will come back?

He thinks about you, but in a measured way. The King of Swords decides with his head, and a return happens only if it makes sense to them on paper as well as in feeling. If there is a way back, it is through a calm, direct conversation about what went wrong, not through pressure.

In my readings

When King of Swords comes up for me.

The King of Swords comes up more in work questions than in love ones, and I find it one of the most useful cards for both. When it shows up, I look at the facts the client has and the ones they do not. A job interview, a promotion, a contract. Very often the answer is already on the table, written down, and the client has been reading it through hope.

When someone is going for a role or waiting on a decision from a person with power over their career, this is the card that tells me merit is what will count. That is when job and career work makes sense: helping them be seen clearly by the person on the other side of the desk.

If this card is about someone

When a card keeps coming up about the same person, the question under it is bigger than its meaning. These are the two ways I can help with it today.
